Why this exists

Our household has never had just one pet, and for most of the years we've had them, that meant birthday reminders and vet appointments and the occasional shed fur on the couch. It didn't mean much tracking. You remember which dog gets which pill. You notice when something's off. That's what having pets is like, for a while.

It stops being like that as they get older. Right now our dog and cat between them account for multiple ongoing conditions, several regular medications, and more than one vet who needs to be kept in the loop — sometimes about the same issue, sometimes about different ones that interact with each other. None of that shows up all at once. It accumulates: one diagnosis, one new prescription, one "let's keep an eye on this" at a time, until the thing you used to just remember is now a dozen things, tracked nowhere, held together by whoever happens to be paying attention that day.

A year ago, that gap cost us. We lost a member of our household, and a real part of why was something painfully ordinary: she'd stopped eating, for the better part of a week, and each of us assumed the other had refilled her food. Nobody was careless. There just wasn't anything in place that would have made that visible before it became serious. By the time it was obvious, it wasn't a small problem anymore.

That's the actual reason this app exists. Not a market opportunity — a gap we lived through. The things that matter most in caring for an aging pet are often the smallest and most easily missed, exactly because they don't feel urgent until suddenly they are. A shared, honest record — one that shows what's been given, what's been checked, and what's changing — is the difference between catching something early and finding out too late.

DenSignal is built the way I try to build anything: start from a real problem, keep the solution as calm and precise as the problem is stressful, and don't add anything that isn't earning its place. It's a working tool for our own household first. If it's useful for yours too, that's exactly the point.
